How to Politely Ask for Donations in Lieu of Wedding Gifts
Wedding registries and gift lists can be a fun part of the wedding planning process for many engaged couples. But some couples already feel they have everything they needs, simply can’t fit anything else in their city-sized apartment and would rather use their wedding registry (or other event registry) to give back to a cause they care about.
If you are thinking about asking your wedding guests to contribute to VOW for Girls or any other charitable cause for your wedding, it can be confusing wondering what to write and how to ask your guests politely. So we have gone ahead and provided some sample language to request donations in lieu of wedding gifts.
Your presence at our wedding is more than enough so, please, no gifts required. If you’re interested in blessing us with a present, please consider donating to [charity link].
We can’t wait to celebrate our wedding with you! We have been overwhelmed with generosity since our engagement party. For this reason, we politely request no wedding gifts. If you’d like to help us celebrate, consider donating to [charity link].
[Partner’s name] and I are passionate about [charity, and explain why]. In lieu of gifts, please consider making a donation to [charity link] in our names. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
We are so grateful to have everything we need in starting our next chapter of life together. Please know that your presence on our day is more than enough, but for those who have expressed an interest, we’ve listed the charities closest to our hearts. A contribution would be most appreciated in lieu of a gift.
Your presence at our wedding is the best present. In lieu of wedding gifts, we encourage you to consider donating to [charity link]. For your convenience, we have also registered at [gift registry] to help us begin married life.
Keep in mind that wedding gifts from guests are encouraged, not required. When creating “donations in lieu of gifts” wording, focus on conveying why the cause is important to you and your partner, as well as sharing how your guests can contribute.
Some guests may not feel comfortable giving a wedding donation online via a general website, as it may not feel personal enough. For those reasons, you may want to create a charitable registry, in addition to or in lieu of a traditional registry, which can be customized and assure your guests that they have landed in the right place.
About VOW for Girls
From wedding registry donations to partner product purchases, everything donated to VOW (that’s 100% of donations!) goes directly to community-driven efforts to help girls around the world. Our grantees, which are mainly women-led local organizations, use the funding we provide to directly support girls.
Twelve million girls a year, some as young as 8, become child brides. VOW is a global movement of the wedding industry community, partners and couples who are dedicated to a world where no child is ever a bride and where every girl has the chance to live the life she loves.
If you’re in the wedding industry and you’re interested in becoming involved, please find more wedding inspiration and advice in our blog, consider becoming a VOW Pro partner and learning more about VOW’s mission to end child marriage.
