Hasma was only 18 when she was forced into marriage in Nepal.
"One day I was a student, laughing with my friends, and the next day I was someone's wife. My books were gone, my freedom was gone."
She recalls trying to accept her new reality. But her husband was controlling, telling her when she could leave the house, who she could talk to, and even what she could dream about. They fought frequently.
"There were nights when I cried into my pillow so no one would hear me. I felt invisible."
Hasma decided she couldn't live like this. She knew she deserved better.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
With the help and support of her friends in the Jyoti Kishori Group, run by Fatima Foundation —a VOW for Girls-supported organization in Nepal—she found the courage to ask for a divorce.
The backlash she faced in her community was swift and harsh. People judged her and whispered behind her back. If not for the support and encouragement from her friends, she may have given up.
"They took me to counseling, guided me through the legal steps, and reminded me again and again, 'you are not alone.'"
The divorce process was painful, full of court visits and relentless questioning.
"But every time I wanted to break down, I thought of the girl I used to be—the one who dreamed of finishing school, of becoming someone. And I kept going."
Finally, she was granted a divorce. Hasma felt like she had been given her life back.
Today, Hasma is attending literacy classes, learning tailoring skills, and dreaming of opening up her own shop someday.
"Now, I am free. For the first time in years, I can breathe without fear.”
Hasma's story is not unique. Across Nepal and around the world, girls are married too young, silenced, and trapped in a cycle that repeats generation after generation. But with the right support at the right moment, they can start over and build their own future.
"I was saved because someone believed in me," Hasma says. "If you ever meet a girl like me, please believe her, too. You might be the reason she finds her freedom."
Through VOW for Girls' support of community-led organizations like Fatima Foundation, more girls can access the mentorship, education, confidence and resources they need to build brighter futures on their own terms.
Just $10 a month can provide school supplies for one girl for a month, from paper and pencils to books and school clothes.
